Get Ready for Storm Season

The HearthIQ TeamJul 3, 2026 · 5 min read

Storm season is easier to face when the work is already done. A few hours spent gathering supplies, checking your sump pump, and securing important records means you are ready instead of scrambling when a warning comes.

Build a supply kit you will actually use

Keep a bin with flashlights, fresh batteries, bottled water, a first aid kit, and a phone battery pack in one known place. Add a manual can opener and a few days of shelf-stable food. The goal is not to prepare for the worst case, just to not be searching for a flashlight in the dark.

Protect against water

Water is the most common storm damage. If you have a sump pump, pour a bucket of water into the pit to confirm it turns on and drains. Clear gutters and downspouts so heavy rain flows away from the house, and know where your water shutoff is in case a pipe fails.

Secure your documents and power plan

Photograph or scan insurance policies, IDs, and home records so you have them even if papers are lost. Note whether you have a generator and how to run it safely, and keep your car above a quarter tank of fuel when storms are in the forecast.

Common questions

How do I test my sump pump?

Slowly pour a five-gallon bucket of water into the sump pit until the float rises. The pump should switch on, remove the water, and shut off. If it does not, have it serviced before storm season.

What documents should I protect first?

Insurance policies, government IDs, and proof of ownership for major items matter most. Digital copies stored securely mean you still have them even if the originals are damaged.
